PNG to ICO Converter

Turn a PNG into an ICO favicon for your website — transparency kept, scaled to fit. Free, private, made in your browser.

Make a favicon from a PNG

An ICO file is what browsers use for the little favicon in a tab or bookmark. Lumisphere wraps your PNG into an ICO right in your browser, keeping transparency and scaling it to fit (up to 256 px). Drop a square PNG of your logo, download favicon.ico, and drop it into your site’s root. No upload, sign-up or watermark.

  1. 1Add. Drop, paste or browse for an image (or several).
  2. 2Choose. Pick PNG, JPG, WebP or AVIF — tune quality for the lossy ones.
  3. 3Download. Save the converted file, or the whole batch.

Other conversions: Image Converter · PNG to WebP · PNG to JPG · SVG to PNG — the same private, in-browser converter. Need transparency instead? Try the background remover (no upload).

Good to know

How do I convert a PNG to ICO?

Drop a square PNG in, choose ICO, and download favicon.ico — it’s scaled to fit 256 px and keeps transparency, ready for your site.

What size should my PNG be?

A square PNG works best — 256×256 or 512×512. Lumisphere scales it to fit within 256 px, the largest size an ICO stores.

Does the favicon keep transparency?

Yes. The ICO wraps a PNG internally, so a transparent background stays transparent in the icon.

How do I add the favicon to my site?

Put the downloaded favicon.ico in your website’s root folder, or reference it with <link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico"> in your HTML <head>.

Is it free and private?

Yes — no sign-up, no watermark, no limit, and the PNG is converted on your device and never uploaded.

What an .ico is for, and the 256px ceiling

The .ico format exists for two jobs: the tiny favicon a browser shows in a tab or bookmark, and the icon Windows uses for apps and shortcuts. It’s an icon container, not a general image format, which is why it tops out at 256 px — anything larger gets scaled down to fit. Start from a square PNG of your logo so it doesn’t distort, and keep the artwork simple, because shapes that read well at 16 px beat fine detail that turns to mud once it’s shrunk into a tab.

One ICO, or a full favicon package?

A single favicon.ico in your site’s root is enough for a small project — browsers find it automatically and show it in the tab. But a polished site usually wants more: Apple touch icons, Android maskable icons and a web manifest for installable apps. If that’s you, our dedicated favicon generator builds the whole multi-size package and the matching HTML in one go. Use this PNG-to-ICO tool when you just need the classic icon, fast.
